Over time, there has been a surge in the debt profile of developing countries, bringing them to the front line of unsustainable debt levels. In servicing these debts, these debtor nations are neither left with funds to meet immediate economic and social needs nor funds to invest in their environmental conservation pathways which invariably intensifies their energy transition risks. The attempt to address this limitation has therefore birthed the debt-for-nature (DFN) swap initiative to provide support to debt burdened developing nations in achieving long-term climate goals.
