We can’t save the planet if we’re exhausted trying: Climate anxiety is the new burnout

A growing number of people are not disengaging from climate action because they don’t care but because, psychologically, they can no longer carry it.
This is the uncomfortable truth at the center of today’s sustainability movement. We are asking individuals, organizations, and entire generations to sustain long-term engagement with a crisis that is global, existential, and structurally slow to resolve. Yet we have built almost no systems to sustain them in return.
Climate anxiety is no longer a side effect of the crisis. It is becoming a limiting factor in our ability to respond to it.
A global study published in The Lancet Planetary Health found that 59% of young people report being very or extremely worried about climate change, and more than 45% say these feelings negatively affect their daily lives and functioning (Hickman et al., 2021). Many express a belief that humanity is failing and that the future is compromised.
Research in Nature Climate Change further describes eco-anxiety as a chronic fear of environmental collapse—one that is increasingly linked not only to distress, but to behavioral paralysis. The American Psychological Association has also identified climate-related distress as a growing mental health concern, particularly among younger generations and highly engaged professionals. This is not a communication problem. It is a capacity problem.
Climate Anxiety Mirrors Burnout — At a Planetary Scale Burnout, in its classical definition, emerges when sustained effort meets low perceived impact and limited control. Climate anxiety reproduces this structure almost perfectly.
Individuals are told their actions matter — reduce, recycle, advocate — yet systemic change often appears slow, fragmented, or insufficient. The perceived gap between effort and outcome widens. Over time, this leads to emotional exhaustion, a diminished sense of agency, and eventually disengagement — often disguised as detachment or realism.
What we are witnessing is not apathy. It is psychological overload.
The Hidden Risk: Losing the People Driving the Transition The climate transition depends disproportionately on a relatively small group of highly engaged individuals: policymakers, researchers, founders, activists, and sustainability professionals. Yet these individuals are also the most exposed to:
• continuous streams of alarming data
• high moral urgency
• long and uncertain feedback loops
Research highlighted by the American Psychological Association suggests that prolonged exposure to uncontrollable threats is associated with decreased motivation, withdrawal, and burnout. This introduces a critical and often overlooked variable in climate strategy: human sustainability capacity. If the individuals driving change become psychologically depleted, the pace and effectiveness of the transition will be directly affected.
Modern sustainability frameworks — ESG metrics, net-zero commitments, green finance — are increasingly sophisticated. But they share a critical omission: they do not account for the psychological sustainability of the people executing them. We measure emissions. We measure capital flows. We rarely measure capacity. This creates a structural contradiction: long-term transformation goals that depend on short-term, high-intensity human effort. From a systems perspective, this is a design flaw.
A strategy that depends on sustained engagement — but does not invest in maintaining that engagement — is not sustainable by definition.
The solution is not to reduce awareness. It is to redesign engagement. We must move from eco-anxiety to eco-agency through three key shifts.
First, psychological sustainability must become measurable. Organizations and institutions should track burnout, retention, and well-being within sustainability roles, integrating these indicators into ESG and performance frameworks.
Second, we must shift from individual burden to structural enablement. Behavioral science consistently shows that individuals do not act consistently under guilt, but under well-designed systems. Sustainability efforts must prioritize infrastructure and policy changes that make sustainable behavior the default, rather than the exception.
Third, we need visible progress loops. Engagement depends on perceived efficacy. Breaking large goals into tangible milestones and communicating progress clearly reduces the psychological distance between effort and impact.
There is a deeper shift required — one that current sustainability frameworks rarely articulate. We must begin to treat care, emotional safety, and human connection not as abstract values, but as infrastructure.
What I define as “Love as Infrastructure” is not rhetorical. It is operational.
It means designing systems that:
• support people under sustained pressure
• enable recovery, not just productivity
• recognize emotional capacity as a finite and critical resource
In practice, this could translate into:
• workplace cultures that prioritize psychological resilience
• leadership models that integrate empathy into decision-making
• policy frameworks that acknowledge the emotional dimension of long-term crises Because no transition — climate or otherwise — can succeed if the people driving it are quietly collapsing.
For decades, sustainability has been defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own.
But this definition is no longer sufficient. We must expand it to include the capacity of individuals and societies to remain psychologically engaged in the process of transformation.
Sustainability is not only about preserving ecosystems. It is about preserving the human capacity to care, act, and persist over time.
Climate change will test our technologies, policies, and economies.
But it will also test something more fundamental: our ability to remain engaged without collapsing. The organizations and governments that lead in the coming decade will not only be those that reduce emissions. They will be those that recognize a deeper truth: the success of sustainability efforts depends not only on what we build, but on whether we can sustain the people building it.
