Bridging Africa's energy divides through solar and renewable investments

Africa possesses nearly 60% of the world's best solar energy resources, yet the continent contributes only about 3% to global energy supply. This stark difference highlights the vast, untapped potential for clean energy development across Africa. In addition, the electrification rate in the West Africa region alone is less than 58% in urban areas and less than 25% in rural areas; these figures underscore the severity of the region's energy deficit. While stakeholders have made efforts to expand electricity access — particularly through hydroelectric dams, gas-fired power projects, and coal — these contributions remain insufficient to meet growing demand. Closing the electrification gap will require significantly increased investment and a deliberate shift toward energy diversification. Governments and energy stakeholders must look beyond conventional sources by scaling up solar and other renewable energy infrastructure, such as wind power, to accelerate access, enhance energy security, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Africa has the potential to generate 10 terawatts (TW) of solar energy annually, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA); investment and infrastructural development are needed to achieve this goal. Some governments have recently been charting this course. The South African government has been pivotal in scaling up investments in solar infrastructure; a project like KHI One has shown what renewable energy-backed investment can achieve. This project generates 50 MW, supplying up to 40,000 household units while reducing reliance on the ailing and overstretched coal-powered plants in the country.
Tunisia, in the north of Africa, has launched its first large-scale solar power plant with a capacity exceeding 100 megawatts. As reported by LumAfrik and other news sources, the plant is capable of delivering up to 120 megawatts of power at peak production. The project was developed by a special purpose company jointly owned by UAE-based Amea Power and China's Xinjiang New Energy, each holding a 50 percent stake. Financing for the project was primarily provided through loans, including $86 million from the International Finance Corporation and around $25 million from the African Development Bank, with support from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa.
Also, Mali in the West Africa region is building a mega solar project with a capacity of 200 MW, boosting electrification supply by 10%. The project spans 314 hectares in Sanankoroba, some kilometers away from Bamako. The country in recent times has doubled down on solar investment, with Chinese, Russian, and Emirati companies moving in. Many more African states have embarked on remarkable projects, and more is still needed to close the gap.
The European Union's "Scaling up renewables in Africa" initiative, in partnership with African governments, has secured €15.5 billion to accelerate clean energy deployment, targeting up to 27 GW of new capacity and expanding access to electricity for millions of homes and businesses. Through the Global Gateway investment strategy, especially the Africa-Europe Green Energy Initiative (AEGEI), the EU is working with African partners to harness these opportunities. By scaling up investment in renewable energy — especially solar — Africa can reduce its energy deficit, power homes and industries, and unlock economic growth.
Closing Africa's energy gap is no longer just a development priority — it is of climate importance and offers an economic advantage. The continent's vast renewable resources, particularly solar, position Africa to leapfrog carbon-intensive energy systems and build a cleaner, more resilient power sector. While recent government initiatives and international partnerships indicate real progress, scaling impact will require sustained political will, innovative financing, strong regulatory frameworks, and private sector participation. By prioritizing renewable investment today, Africa can expand energy access, stimulate industrial growth, create jobs, and play a meaningful role in global climate mitigation. The path forward is clear: renewable energy is not merely an alternative — it is the foundation of Africa's sustainable energy future.
