The Arab region’s quiet sustainability revolution

While the world debates climate action, a region once known primarily for oil is quietly building the infrastructure for a post-carbon future.
Hosting consecutive COP meetings has accelerated corporate sustainability efforts across the Arab region in meaningful ways. An analysis of the Top 40 Most Sustainable Companies list published by Sustain Labs Paris, CSO Network, and Posterity Institute, reveals several emerging trends that offer valuable insights for the global business community.
Companies across the region are discovering that partnership can amplify impact. UAE's Silal operates an Innovation Oasis that provides support to agritech startups developing solutions for challenging environmental conditions. Following Morocco's 2023 earthquake, OCP Group coordinated with regional partners to deliver $97.5 million in relief to affected communities.
Perhaps most significantly, the region has established formal Chief Sustainability Officer networks that facilitate regular cross-sector dialogue and knowledge sharing. This structured approach to collaboration represents an innovative model that could benefit other regions seeking to accelerate their sustainability transitions.
AI is becoming a practical tool for scaling sustainable operations across multiple sustainable operations across multiple sectors in the region.
DEWA has launched a Virtual Power Plant pilot that uses AI-driven optimization to integrate distributed energy resources, including solar systems, battery storage, and EV charging infrastructure. BEEAH has implemented smart waste management systems where sensors and machine learning optimize collection routes and schedules. ADNOC's RoboWell technology applies AI algorithms to operate wells autonomously, enhancing safety while reducing emissions from physical site interventions.
These applications demonstrate how AI can help make sustainable practices more economically viable and operationally efficient at scale.
The region’s environmental constraints, particularly water scarcity and extreme temperatures, have driven the development of innovative solutions with broader applicability.
Emirates Flight Catering operates a vertical farm producing over one million kilograms of leafy greens annually using 95% less water than conventional agriculture. As water stress becomes a growing concern in many parts of the world, these technologies and approaches are gaining relevance beyond the region.
Carbon capture initiatives are also advancing substantially. Saudi Aramco is developing a major CCUS hub with the capacity to capture up to 9 million tons of CO2 annually by 2027. Omani startup 44.01, recognized with the Earthshot Prize in 2022, has developed a method to mineralize captured CO2 into rocks, offering a pathway toward permanent carbon storage.
There is considerable innovation in the healthcare sector, which is harnessing advanced healthcare technologies such as telemedicine, AI-powered diagnostics, and remote patient monitoring to enhance access to quality care in the Arab region. UAE’s PureHealth has developed an in-house innovative tool, the UAE CPRA calculator, a first-of-its-kind in the Arab region that assists physicians in gauging the likelihood of a patient reacting against potential donors, thereby improving organ transplant success rates.
Sustainability disclosure has increased markedly in recent years. Currently, 80% of the region’s top companies publish sustainability-related data, with 75% producing dedicated sustainability or integrated reports. For several companies, 2024 marked their inaugural year of formal sustainability disclosure. Banking, logistics, and telecommunications sectors have been particularly proactive, with increasing alignment to frameworks such as the Global Reporting Initiative.
This trend toward transparency suggests a maturing approach to sustainability governance and stakeholder communication.
While female labour force participation in the region stands at 19%, reflecting ongoing challenges, leading companies are setting goals and making measurable progress. Qatar National Bank's workforce includes 48% women, while STC Group achieved a 31.6% female hiring rate and increased disability employment by 36% in 2023. OCP Group has set a target of 30% women in upper management by 2025, with an ambition to reach 50% across all management levels by 2030.
Efforts to support People of Determination extend beyond hiring metrics. ABCD has developed specialised banking services and scholarship programmes specifically designed to meet their needs, reflecting a more comprehensive approach to workplace inclusion.
The region’s established philanthropic tradition is increasingly being channelled toward strategic sustainability initiatives. Majid Al Futtaim has partnered with American University in Cairo to launch an Executive Diploma in Sustainability, addressing the growing need for specialized expertise in this field. OCP Foundation invested $1.4 billion in community programs in 2023, reaching 1.3 million beneficiaries.
While 65% of top companies disclose their CSR expenditures, there remains a significant opportunity to strengthen impact measurement and reporting practices.
The Arab region’s sustainability journey offers several insights for the broader business community. Structured collaboration networks can accelerate knowledge sharing and progress. Environmental constraints can drive innovations with applications far beyond their original context. And when deployed thoughtfully at scale, technology can fundamentally improve the business case for sustainable operations.
As these trends continue to develop, the region is increasingly contributing new approaches and solutions to global sustainability challenges.
