The Sargassum Blob, a vast expanse of sargassum weed the size of Texas, has been discovered far out in the Atlantic Ocean below the Sargasso Sea. Sargassum weed was not expected here for lack of nutrients. Climate change has played a part in nutrients coming from three directions to turn blue water into a golden floating rainforest threatening Florida beaches.
In the central Atlantic Ocean, there is a belt characterized by massive floating mats of seaweed called sargassum. The belt stretches from West Africa to the Gulf of Mexico, covering an area of approximately 3,417 square miles.

The Sargasso Sea is a sea unconstrained by land. To the north, it is bounded by currents to become a sea within the Atlantic Ocean. It&rsquo;s known for vast floating mats of leafy marine algae with spherical float bladders that reminded Columbus of grapes, called Sargassum. This seaweed lives entirely away from land, unlike most other seaweeds with holdfasts that anchor it to the substrate.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Sargassum has been discovered flourishing in a sea south of the Sargasso Sea. The Azores Current flows south where the African continent recedes from the Americas. Here, the current splits and goes in two directions. Some current flows West to encircle the bottom of the Sargasso Sea while some current flows Southeast to join the Westerly Equatorial Drift. Because the Earth spins to the East, the Equatorial Drift goes West. It is from this sea, formed by the Westerly flowing Azores Current on the north side and the Westerly Equatorial Current to the south, that the Sargassum Blob threatens Florida.&nbsp;
<h2>Nutrient loading from three directions</h2>
This greensward on a sea below the Azores Current the size of Texas is the result of plant life finding nutrients in a previously barren seascape. In the tropical Atlantic Ocean with plenty of warmth and sunlight, climate change has dramatically increased nutrient loading from three directions.&nbsp;
More nutrient-rich cold Arctic waters are flowing into the Atlantic Ocean due to the more open Arctic Ocean. In autumn, more sea ice is forming than ever before. When sea ice freezes, the ice is fresh so that the water may turn to ice. Salts left behind increase the density of cold water that is at the freezing temperature. This briny water sinks to displace water laterally. This is called thermohaline circulation. In the Denmark Strait between Iceland and Greenland, cold, nutrient-rich Arctic waters meet warm, nutrient-poor Atlantic waters and plunge down 11,000 feet to flow south into the Atlantic beneath the less dense seawater. As a result, Svalbard is suffering from more warm Gulf Stream water coursing back into the Arctic Ocean. &nbsp;
From Africa, more nutrient-rich dust is blowing off the Sahara. The land dries as a result of long dry periods and more droughts. The prevailing Westerly winds carry more dust out over the Atlantic to seed the waters with more nutrients.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Finally, there are more extreme weather events, more water sluicing to the sea along with the cutting of more forests, and more developments with excessive amounts of fertilizer. Sargassum does not discriminate between nutrient sources. There is more drawdown of carbon dioxide from the air and more carbohydrates for biomass and exudate to feed fungi, bacteria, and microbes. There are more Sargassum ecosystems flourishing in clear waters.&nbsp;
<h2>A golden wildlife oasis</h2>
Frilly sargassum, a brown macroalgae, provides critical habitat and teams with life for a not-yet-fully-understood diversity of marine life. Sunlight streams through the lacey greens where there are no apparent shadows earning this place the name &ldquo;golden floating rainforest of the Atlantic.&rdquo; The sargassum fish, with the scientific name of Histrio histrio meaning stage actor, dresses the part with frilled appendages and the ability to change colors to match the seaweed. The planehead filefish with a flat head is, well, plainer. However, planehead fish are more agile, quick-moving, and more numerous than sargassum fish.
This is home for the sargassum swimming crab and the sargassum seahorse with a tail grasping leafy fronds to stay upright. In this sheltered bright green nursery, male seahorses brood eggs until they hatch, and young seahorses come out of the pouch.
In the &ldquo;forest&rdquo; dwell gold and emerald juvenile mahi-mahi, jacks, flying fishes, triggerfish, and juvenile loggerhead sea turtles. Larger predators patrol in the water below the drapes of seaweed including wahoo, amberjack, blue marlin, and sailfish.&nbsp;
<h2>What&rsquo;s good for the ocean may be bad for beaches</h2>
The good news is that the ocean is pulling more carbon out of the atmosphere than ever before, creating lots of biomass and entire ecosystems full of marine life.&nbsp;The bad news is when all that organic carbon arrives on Florida&rsquo;s shores.&nbsp;&nbsp;
When large quantities of Sargassum wash up on beaches, it can make the sand unsightly and cause a foul smell akin to rotten eggs, causing respiratory problems. The large mats of Sargassum can also make navigation difficult for boats and ships, particularly those with propellers. This can pose a safety hazard and increase the risk of accidents. Fishing derbies are canceled at great expense.&nbsp;
Unfortunately, because it is always complex, there is more bad news. Corexit, a toxic forever chemical used as a dispersant to break up oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico, has been found in Sargassum weed.&nbsp;
Sargassum coming to shore can negatively impact marine life. When the seaweed accumulates in large amounts, it can smother and kill sea grasses, other marine plants, essential habitats, and food sources for many species. Manatees in Florida are already starving due to the lack of seagrass smothered by harmful algal blooms and cut up by propellers.&nbsp;
As Sargassum breaks down, it releases organic matter that rots and can lead to oxygen depletion in the water. This can create "dead zones" that harm fish and other marine life.
While Sargassum is a crucial component of ocean ecosystems, excessive amounts can negatively impact the environment and economy of coastal regions.
We will continue to see the unintended consequences of rising global temperatures and the use of harmful chemicals. It becomes even more apparent that everything is connected, from the Arctic Ocean, the Sahara Desert, and rivers to the Atlantic Ocean to the coast of Florida.&nbsp;
Everyone must do their part to combat this climate crisis. From slowing water down, keeping water in our neighborhoods, not fertilizing lawns so the grass will pull down more carbon and build more soil, and pressuring our lawmakers to take big, bold actions, our efforts will make a world of difference on land, shore and sea.

Atlantic Ocean off Florida spawns a giant Sargassum Blob

This has already been a terrible year for whales, with 23 dead whales found along the East Coast since early December 2022. To win the fight for whale lives, we should slow all boats to ten knots in the presence of whales, use lineless lobster and crab traps, and reduce the amounts of pollutants and freshwater discharged into the sea.

Massachusetts officially declared April 24 as Right Whale Day to raise awareness about the endangered: North Atlantic right whales, the state&rsquo;s official marine mammal.
Right whales have been coming to Cape Cod Bay in April for as long as there has been a Cape Cod Bay. These sandy, shoaly waters warm faster than deeper, dark-bottom ocean realms. In the Gulf of Maine, a sea beside the Atlantic Ocean, seawater rotates counterclockwise fastest in April, driven by river water coming off the land. Nutrient-rich waters are upwelled on the threshold of Stellwagen Bank, defining the East boundary of Massachusetts Bay and drifting on into Cape Cod Bay, where phytoplankton blooms feed zooplankton feeding right and sei whales. Forage fish, including sand lance, herring, and mackerel, eat zooplankton and are then scooped up by gaping-mouthed minke, fin, and humpback whales.
It&rsquo;s time for the National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to slow vessel speeds to 10 knots. Ships were slowed down from March 1st to April 30th.&nbsp; There were no vessel-related right whale deaths during the spring season from 2008 until 2016.
<h2>The lives lost</h2>
On May 5th, 2016, a right whale calf was found dead off Morris Island in Chatham. It was the first right whale fatality by ship strike since speed restrictions were implemented in 2008. The 30-ft long calf weighing about 10,000 pounds was the eighth right whale born to a whale named Punctuation. Mother and calf were observed swimming together in Cape Cod Bay on April 28th.&nbsp; As a result, speed restrictions were extended in the Race Point area after April 30th.
On April 13th, 2017, a juvenile female right whale was found dead off Barnstable, where speed restrictions were in effect from January 1st to May 15th. This second right whale death was the first ship strike death documented in or near a seasonal management zone since the speed rule was enacted.
This has already been a terrible year for whales, with 23 dead whales found along the East Coast since early December 2022. Most of the whales lost were humpbacks (16) and minke whales.
In February, a 20-year-old male right whale, 43 feet long, was struck and killed by a vessel off Virginia Beach. The whale had multiple vertebral fractures and separations. There was no evidence of entanglements or evidence of trauma for the whale in normal to thin nutritional conditions.
<h2>Causes of whale deaths</h2>
This tragedy for whales is linked to record-setting pandemic buying habits that have resulted in more ship traffic. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has reported a 27 percent increase in cargo volume from 2019. In addition, ships are returning to retrieve empty cargo containers that accumulated in port and contributed to last year&rsquo;s supply-chain havoc.
The secondary cause of whale deaths is entanglement with lobster and crab trap lines. Developing lineless traps is not as simple as non-lobstermen think. Two years of research found that floating a trap to the surface is a lesser challenge than retrieving pots gone adrift in all types of wind, waves, and weather. More time is needed to figure this out before they can be mandated.
Diminishing food sources are the third force quelling whale populations. Phytoplankton, tiny plant-like organisms, are about 65% less productive than two decades ago. With warming seas and plenty of nutrients washing off the land, this makes no sense. These are the conditions for harmful algal blooms and episodic events of ocean dead zones.
Over the last two decades, there have been developments on the land, more impervious surfaces with more surface runoff following more extreme rainfalls. The infamous year was 2013 when surface ocean temperatures reportedly rose four degrees. This was a sweltering summer, 1.3 to 1.6 degrees above average. At 172% of average rainfall, 2013 was wet and the third wettest since 1895.
<h2>The way forward</h2>
More developments result in more suburban lawns and powerlines with more herbicides applied. We need to slow the flushing of poisons into the sea to restore&nbsp;phytoplankton growth. If we can retain water when it is in great abundance, there will be more water in the landscape during droughts, and more water in the ground keeps rivers flowing during the summer. Less fresh hot water stretching out across the sea&rsquo;s surface will also cool the ocean throughout the summer.
To win the fight for whale lives, we must slow all boats to ten knots in the presence of whales, use lineless lobster and crab traps, reduce the amounts of pollutants and warm water discharged into the sea, and become better stewards of land, sea, and whales.

Winning the fight for the lives of whales

Mature and old growth forests are the best places to increase biodiversity and stop climate change. Contrary to popular belief, the carbon storage and wildlife diversity of an 84-year-old forest is much more than twice that of a 40-year-old forest. For these reasons, it makes no sense to cut a forest just when it’s beginning to get its ecological act together. Nonetheless, the U.S. Forestry Service permits forest cuts after the first 40 years claiming it is good for both the health of the forest and the local economy.

Federal officials overseeing the Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont are scheduled to double the amount of logging in the next five years over the previous five years. Under that plan, as much as 62 million board feet of lumber would be cut from the national forest.

The motto of the U.S. Forest Service is to manage public lands for “the greatest good for the greatest number for the longest time.” With better understanding of old growth forests, it has become clear to let the forests grow to support the full range of native biodiversity while removing move carbon from the atmosphere.
In New England, the White and Green Mountain National Forests have some of the largest areas of intact and connected forests. It is better to let these forests mature than to plant trees.
Public forests cover just nine percent of New England. Significant parcels of public land are recovering the characteristics of older forests. Older forests accumulate as much as four times the carbon as younger forests. Public forests contain 30 percent more carbon than private forests on average due to larger stands of older forests.
The American marten and the endangered northern long-eared bat depend on undisturbed old forests. In addition to supporting high-quality habitat for New England’s native species, older forests produce superior-quality drinking water. Forests also protect the watershed against flooding and drought.
More than 96 percent of the wood supply in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine comes from private forests. Four percent of the wood supply from public lands is not that significant of a benefit to local economies. Our economies also benefit when there’s less damage from extreme weather events.
On Earth Day, President Biden issued an executive order that directs federal agencies to inventory and protect mature and old-growth forests on federal public lands. He gets it.
It’s time President Biden took the next step with an executive order to exclusively protect all the nation’s public forests, young, mature and old-growth forests. The lungs of the planet need all forests to inhale more carbon dioxide while we release less.
The logging of private lands and the cutting of plantation forests will continue. This is even more reason to protect public lands to provide the much-needed services of clean water, slow climate change, enact greater diversity of wildlife, and more Thoreauvian forest walks for everyone.

Speak for the trees: President Biden should protect public forests

Climate Change has brought fiercer storms with devastating floods and long-lasting droughts that stressed and killed plants and animals. Once we controlled water. These days, water is in control and is harming us. 

What if we changed our relationship with water to better understand its behavior? What if we were more respectful and asked, what does water want? Communities that have taken a less confrontational and more collaborative approach with water have created better places in which people are happier.

What if we changed our relationship with water to better understand its behavior? What if we were more respectful and asked, what does water want? Communities that have taken a less confrontational and more collaborative approach with water have created better places in which people are happier.
Louisville, Kentucky suffered a great deluge when 7.2 inches of rain fell in just 78 minutes. Flood waters that cataracted through properties at the University of Louisville caused $21 million in damages. The university responded and adapted with a variety of “green infrastructure” projects deployed to help keep stormwater runoff out of the combined sewer system. 
The university slowed water with absorbing changes to the campus landscape. They disconnected downspouts, put out rain barrels, built cisterns, installed vegetated roofs, and built rain gardens and bioswales to facilitate groundwater recharge through infiltration. Pervious pavement and permeable pavers replaced impervious surfaces in lots, roadways, plazas, and sidewalks. For remaining hard surfaces and fast runoff areas, large underground infiltration basins were installed. 
The University of Louisville gained a better understanding of sustainable water management. The university is now diverting about 72 million gallons of stormwater every year, has a greener campus, and should never again suffer damages during rainstorms.
Farmers in Watsonville, California, irrigate strawberries, artichokes, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, raspberries, and natural plants with water pumped up from the aquifer beneath their fields. Trouble was the lens of water in the ground was shrinking and salt water from Monterey Bay was intruding.
In response to the over-pumping problem, California created the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency (PVWMA) to charge water users for the groundwater they drew in hopes that they would use less water. Still, the groundwater diminished.
With a better understanding of water, PVWMA paid farmers to run their irrigation pumps backwards to recharge groundwater with rainwater that would otherwise go into storm drains to the sea. Farmers are credited 50 percent of the recharge against their future groundwater pumping costs. That figure is conservative because some of the infiltrated water will flow outwards into the wider hydrologic system before it can be pumped out by the farmer.
There are multiple spinoff benefits to paying farmers to pump stormwater into the aquifer. This water helps to push seawater back to the ocean, reducing saltwater intrusion. Pumped stormwater keeps the soil moist, which reduces the need to irrigate, and it maintains higher groundwater levels. Best of all, there are no arguments as to who owns the water. In the Pajaro Valley, the water belongs to everyone. 
In Falmouth, Massachusetts, rainwater washed fertilizer off the lawns into Little Pond. This nutrient pollution during the summer caused a harmful algal bloom that killed 16 striped bass. Falmouth adapted to increased rainfall by banning the use of fertilizers on established lawns. Ten years later, there has not been another harmful algal bloom, no fish kills, and the lawns are no less green than in towns where fertilizer is spread liberally.
Falmouth discovered that without fertilizer, grass roots go deep into the soil to open it up and make it more porous and habitable for soil organisms. Long fungal strands fuse with roots to form mycorrhizal networks larger than the lawn. A single fungal strand inside the plant touches each cell. If a plant cell is stressed, perhaps by someone walking on the grass or a pest munching, it signals into the mycorrhizal network what it needs to grow and remedy the situation. Bacteria respond to signals to put what is requested into the “wood wide web” that is transported to the grass. 
Plants combine water and carbon dioxide, and with energy from the sun, create carbohydrates. Absent sunlight in the soil, root exudate is a primary energy source for soil organisms. With grasses, about half of the liquid carbon goes to grow the plant and half is pushed out of root tips to build soil.
Lawn soils are the best because they are high in organic carbon, mostly root exudate plus detritus. When the carbon-mineral mixture goes through a chemical transformation it becomes humus. Humus is the black in rich soil, high in nutrients, where water and oxygen move easily, thanks in part to the capillary action of roots and to worms. This soil swells greatly when it rains. Four inches of lawn soil can hold seven inches of rainwater. The ability to absorb and hold water is greatly reduced in other soils. Sandy soils that are three inches deep will hold no more than three inches of rainwater.
In Springfield, Massachusetts, 16 lawns were not fertilized or watered. Lawns were mowed with the blade set to 3.5 to 4 inches high and cuttings were left on the lawn. A third of the lawns were cut every week. A third cut every two weeks and a third every three weeks. <a href="https://academic.oup.com/aesa/article/109/5/713/2195339">These lawns were found to have 36 kinds of flowers. The lawns cut every two weeks had the greatest diversity of bee species</a>. Overall, 111 bee species! The one-week-cut lawns did not give the flowers enough time, and perhaps the three-week cut had higher grasses than some bees prefer.
Water was a determining factor for bee diversity. The bees of natural lawns are smaller than hiving bees and are more sensitive to falling water drops. Some are pith-nesting bees that cannot survive “a good soak.” Researchers have also found that bee diversity goes down with inclement weather.
The four communities, one suffering from flood damages, one losing groundwater to agriculture, one blaming lawns for harmful algal blooms, and one keeping lawns while increasing wildflower and bee abundance with greater biodiversity, experienced a dramatic shift from a scarcity mindset to one of shared abundance. Arguments and the setting of priorities, tradeoffs, gave way to collaborative efforts, helping one another with quality-of-life benefits for everyone, even including what’s good for nature.
Our rivers are fed with cool water that seeps in from the ground or gurgles from springs. Rivers depend on water in aquifers. Diminishing water in the ground are the reason for low water flows. There has been a great loss of aquifer recharge to lands covered by impervious surfaces. The faster water flows across the surface, the less will infiltrate into the ground. Topping off the aridification of neighborhoods is the loss of soil.
Sometimes overlooked in all the climate change talk has been the importance of soil to the world’s water and carbon cycles. Soils covering less than 10 percent of the Earth are more than three times the amount of carbon found in the air. <a href="https://e360.yale.edu/features/soil_as_carbon_storehouse_new_weapon_in_climate_fight">Carbon dioxide amounts to 800 billion tons of carbon worldwide versus 2,500 billion tons of organic carbon in soils</a>.
Here&#x27;s the problem. The more carbon and water we have in the air, the less carbon and water we have in the soil. The less water and carbon in the soil, the less plants can grow, and the more carbon and water is left in the atmosphere. It’s a vicious circle that we can change. The nature-based solution is to get more organic carbon into the soil and water will follow.
A natural lawn in the best of conditions can build an inch of soil in a year. No other plant comes close to the high percentage of manufactured carbon pushed out as root exudate. For a lawn that is 240 square feet an inch of soil weighs one ton. For one ton of root exudate, grass plants must make about two tons of carbohydrates, with half going to biomass and half coming out of the roots to build soil. Carbohydrate molecular weight is 3.64 times that of carbon dioxide. For a ton of soil, 7.28 tons of carbon is pulled out of the atmosphere
If Massachusetts were to pay property owners by the ton for storing carbon as soil, there would be incentives to stop using chemicals including quick-release fertilizers, and to replace hard surfaces with initially grass. With deeper soils, the need for watering is less and plants stay green longer.
There’s more. If Massachusetts incentivized property owners to pump storm water into the ground, there would be reductions in stormwater damages, more water in the land including soils, and steadier water flow in rivers during dry months.
Pumping is required when we simply do not have sufficient permeable surface areas needed for infiltration. The State paying property owners to pump water avoids the big one-time costs of purchasing real estate. Paying to pump is more just in application. Fixing a value on water would enable banks to make revenue projections and to finance construction of their neighborhood Community Water and Energy Resource Centers.
If an institution in Cambridge, Massachusetts put 72 million gallons of water into the ground, as the University of Louisville does annually, essentially running the water meter backwards, at current water rates it would save the institution hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Unlike generating energy, the cost of managing water does not go down when put back into the ground. Governments would need to provide upfront funding for municipal waterworks to cover revenue lost. However, this expense should be more than offset by the savings in stormwater and drought damages.
We can adapt to climate change and reduce the damages of deluges or droughts by slowing water down with soil, with more green spaces including by either replacing or on top of concrete, and by actively putting water back into the ground. Research indicates we can slow sea level rise by as much as 25%.
Working with climate change, we may literally set up a rainy-day fund measured in gallons of water. Property owners could pump water into the ground and be compensated with reduced water bills during extreme rainfalls. Property owners are also compensated for storing carbon by the ton of new soil.
By investing in pumping water and building soil in the ground, the Commonwealth would see big returns with more resilience during droughts, less need to water plants, less flood damages, more water in our cold stream rivers during dry periods, and a reduction in sea level rise. More difficult to quantify, but no less important, are the quality-of-life improvements when there is more green vegetation with shade and windbreaks, more cooling in summer (evaporation) and more warming when it’s cold (condensation). Finally, there will be more nature in our local landscapes and happier people in our neighborhoods.

Slowing Water for Greener Neighborhoods

Fighting climate change must not be about people fighting with people. This metaphor makes us quick to lay blame, scapegoat, and make it personal. My actions are better than yours, and I hate you for not doing it my way. Rather, we are all on the same side, fighting to reduce the burden of too much carbon in the atmosphere. As in COP27, we will only succeed by working with respect for others and in concert with one another.

Perhaps the biggest success coming out of the UN Climate Talks, COP27, was the one least likely to succeed – the creation of a Loss and Damage Fund. To be held responsible for another’s loss and damages, such a fund should have been a nonstarter in a society quick to litigate. And it nearly was when some rich nations attempted to divide developing countries.
Pakistan succeeded in keeping countries united, for their diplomats had witnessed the devastation and floods, which caused $30 billion of damages and economic losses. They were experienced in maintaining discipline in the group of 77 (which essentially includes all developing nations led by Pakistan) and savvy in attempts to turn the Alliance of Small Island States against others and accept a narrow fund. Fortunately, the G77 remained strong and did not stray from its message: “Loss and damage is not charity. It’s about climate justice.”
Much credit for successfully setting up a Loss and Damage Fund is also due to civil society pressure from more than 1,900 organizations from 130 countries.
“Pakistan led from the front. But civil society pressure gave power to negotiators inside the conference rooms to fight harder,” said Harjeet Singh, the global political director at Climate Action Network.
UN Climate Secretary Antonio Guterres, in his closing remarks, was spot on, saying: “The red line we must not cross is the line that takes our planet over the 1.5-degree temperature limit… We can and must win this battle for our lives.”
However, he misconstrued the skilled and collaborative work of the COP27 delegates and advocates to perpetuate a real problem when he also said in closing remarks: “It will take each and every one of us fighting in the trenches each and every day.”
Fighting climate change must not be about people fighting with people. This metaphor makes us quick to lay blame, scapegoat, and make it personal. My actions are better than yours, and I hate you for not doing it my way. Rather, we are all on the same side, fighting to reduce the burden of too much carbon in the atmosphere. As in COP27, we will only succeed by working with respect for others and in concert with one another.
If we must use military analogies, think Top Gun, where we all are skilled stewards flying fast in formation. It’s not the destination. The exhilaration of fast flight, the air beneath our wings, and the fellowship of achievements as a tight team keeps us on course, returning to COP meetings and striving for a healthier planet.
It’s not the plane; it’s the pilot — roger that.

President Biden stood by the Red Sea in Egypt on Nov. 11th before delegates from 197 nations at the UN Climate Conference COP27. With Congress hogtied on delivering on any climate change pledges because Republicans had taken a slim majority of the House of Representatives, Biden took command with administrative actions that would slow global warming to achieve the objective of 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F) rise above preindustrial levels by 2030.

Major federal government contractors interested in bidding for any of the over $630 billion that the US Government spends annually would be required to publicly disclose their greenhouse gas emissions, climate-related financial risks and set science-based emission reduction targets.
In short, corporations without a responsible carbon emission plan with accountable benchmarks will not be awarded government contracts. It is a waste of taxpayers’ money for the government to pay companies that are not implementing steps to reduce their carbon emissions while also compensating communities for damages caused by extreme weather events and sea level rise.
Biden’s solution for businesses is not prescriptive or regulatory, but rather market driven and competitive. Businesses are incentivized to develop their best carbon-emission-reducing practices. Game on.
The process is transparent where all may see what companies propose as their best practices. With government contracts at stake, it is likely business groups will collaborate to fast-track the development of best practices and not get caught without a government contract.
This is game over for corporate greenwashing. How green a corporation is will be quantified by the actual amount of carbon emissions being reduced right now and more in the future. Less important are flaunted superficial factors such as percent of recycled materials, number of trees planted, or carbon offsets purchased. Public records will demonstrate to what extent corporations are fighting climate change or colluding with global warming.
Biden has taken a page from the Massachusetts Decarbonization Roadmap Act of 2020, where the government works with businesses to develop best practices to reduce emissions and set ambitious timed benchmarks. Businesses who snooze, lose, while the decarbonization and money-saving train leaves the station.
For example, about a decade ago, Frito-Lay, a subsidiary of Pepsi, improved the fuel efficiency of their delivery trucks. This led to a dramatic increase in applications of drivers. Many were climate champions who wished to show off green trucks. Recently Frito-Lay announced the purchase of 40 Ford eTransit trucks.
The work is put back on corporations by setting the bar for government contracts to meet carbon-reducing benchmarks. World leaders understand that government expenditures should remediate and not worsen climate change. There are costs borne by everyone to buying diesel locomotives. Better for governments to follow the lead of Canada and Australia to purchase battery-electric 4,400 horsepower locomotives built in Erie, Pennsylvania.
We are slowing global temperature rise as corporations working with governments are being held to task by savvy citizens, while turning the tide to reduce the 900 billion tons of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and put back into the 2800 billion tons of carbohydrates in organic water-holding soils as more climate-best practices take hold.
It is just a matter of effort and time. We can do this.
