The world has a problem: Big Oil’s hijacking of the climate action narrative. The power of the legacy energy industry means that mountains of flawed and backwards thinking – much of which contributed to the climate crisis – are preventing major institutions from recognising the most transformative pathways forward. It’s also exposing them to gigantic financial risks which are about to unfold in the next few years. I decided to write directly to Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE President of the upcoming United Nations COP28 climate summit, to provide them with an economic and technological reality-check.
