Solar power helps Amazon communities ditch diesel and prepare for El Niño drought

illuminem summarises for you the essential news of the day, reviewed by our editorial team. Read the full piece on Associated Press or enjoy below:

🗞️ Driving the news: Solar power is helping remote Amazon communities replace diesel generators while preparing for another potentially severe drought
• In Nova Sociedade, solar-powered pumps now supply clean water to all 36 families, while household systems provide electricity for lighting and basic appliances

🔭 The context: The shift follows the historic 2024 Amazon drought, when residents had to walk up to 20 kilometres for water
• Off-grid solar is spreading rapidly: Brazil had more than 100,000 remote off-grid systems by 2026, up from just 105 in 2020
• Many of the roughly 1 million people in the Amazon still without electricity depend on costly diesel generators

🌍 Why it matters for the planet: Replacing diesel with solar cuts local fossil-fuel use while improving resilience to climate-driven disruptions
• Reliable clean electricity can also strengthen Indigenous and traditional communities that play an important role in protecting Amazon forests and their carbon stores

⏭️ What’s next: Solar projects are expanding beyond homes and water systems into schools, clinics and local businesses
• Partners are planning 20 pilot projects over the next two to three years for activities including sustainable fishing, agriculture and fruit processing

💬 One quote: “This technology uses the power of the sun and can replace other ways of generating electricity that often require clearing the forest or burning fuel.” — Caetano Scannavino, Saúde e Alegria

📈 One stat: More than 100,000 off-grid systems had been installed in remote Amazon areas by 2026, compared with just 105 in 2020
