🗞️ Driving the news: Singapore will invest S$143m, nearly $112m, in research and development to accelerate industrial decarbonisation, with a focus on technologies including carbon capture, CO₂ utilisation and low-carbon fuels
🔭 The context: Up to S$100m will support the new DRIVE programme, which will co-fund company-led research with Singapore’s research institutions
• Five projects from an earlier low-carbon energy programme will also receive follow-on funding to scale technologies and test them in industrial settings
• Singapore is separately building a S$62m low-carbon technology testbed on Jurong Island, with initial projects covering sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen and methanol-to-power systems
🌍 Why it matters: Industry accounts for around 65% of Singapore’s national emissions, including electricity use, making manufacturing central to the country’s net-zero strategy
• The government is trying to reduce emissions without weakening industrial competitiveness in a country constrained by limited land and renewable-energy resources
• Shared testing infrastructure could lower the cost and risk of moving emerging technologies from research into commercial deployment
⏭️ What’s next: Singapore will continue funding industrial pilots and commercialisation pathways, while approved companies including Keppel Energy, Sembcorp Utilities and Tuas Power Generation prepare to aggregate biomethane imports that could support up to 300MW of capacity from 2028
📈 One stat: Singapore is committing S$143m to industrial decarbonisation R&D, within a broader S$800m Decarbonization Grand Challenge
