🗞️ Driving the news: Singapore-based Climate Impact X and London-based Carbonplace have agreed to merge, combining carbon trading, settlement and registry infrastructure in an effort to deepen liquidity and strengthen trust in global carbon markets
🔭 The context: CIX operates markets for carbon credits, renewable energy certificates and related environmental products, while Carbonplace provides portfolio management, multi-registry access and bank-grade settlement infrastructure
• The combined shareholder group includes major financial institutions such as BNP Paribas, DBS, NatWest, Standard Chartered, UBS and SMBC
• The merger will connect CIX’s trading and price-discovery capabilities with Carbonplace’s settlement, custody and retirement infrastructure
🌍 Why it matters: Fragmentation, limited liquidity and inconsistent infrastructure remain key obstacles to scaling carbon markets into a credible source of climate finance
• By linking Singapore and London, the combined company aims to provide institutional investors and companies with more transparent and auditable access across different registries, standards and regulatory regimes
⏭️ What’s next: CIX CEO Oi-Yee Choo will lead the combined company, with Carbonplace CEO Scott Eaton becoming President, while both businesses continue operating under their existing brands until integration is expected to complete in the first quarter of 2027
📈 One stat: The merged platform will be backed by 12 major banks and investors, spanning two of the world’s leading financial and carbon-market hubs
