Spotlight insights

Sustainability hiring remains active but is becoming more selective. In the past four months, hiring has been led mainly by mature sustainability leaders such as MSCI, LEGO, WSP, Ricardo, and Mace Group, while companies earlier in their sustainability journey appear more cautious or temporarily on hold.

Average sustainability maturity among hiring companies stands at 61%, according to illuminem’s methodology. 

Geographically, hiring is now concentrated in four main hubs: the UK, US, Benelux, and Italy. Cities such as London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Milan, and New York dominate new postings. By contrast, Scandinavian and Swiss roles have declined compared to previous months.

Sector dynamics are also shifting. Carbon roles and corporate decarbonization roles are rising again, particularly among large corporations, climate advisory firms and industrial transition specialists. At the same time, circular economy roles are declining, and more traditional sectors such as real estate and healthcare appear relatively frozen in terms of sustainability hiring.

Another notable trend: salary levels are slightly lower than earlier in the year, with companies hiring smaller teams and expecting broader responsibilities from each role.

Across functions, four main skill clusters dominate current hiring:

Overall, the sustainability job market is stabilizing, yet becoming harder to break into: fewer speculative hires and more roles focused on corporate decarbonization, data, and execution.
