Alex Langer’s Advice for a Future Friend: "lentius, profundius, suavius"

This special poem was chosen to open illuminem's first community celebration in the summer of 2024, to remember "who we are and where we come from"

In front of hundreds of climate leaders, Angelo Bonelli, Spokesperson of Green Europe, Susan Ellicott, former BBC correspondent, and Omar Alshogre, a world famous human rights activist read the ethernal words of Alex Langer.

Alex Langer is considered one of the fathers of European environmentalism and Integral Ecology, having served as Member of the European Parliament, co-leader of the European Greens and having gained recognition for countless peace initiatives.

The poem was recited at the 1994 Assisi Youth Conference. Beginning with the theme of Franciscan simplicity, Alex explored "our troubled world," aiming to manifest the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi through the motto "lentius, profundius, soavius" (slower, deeper, gentler). This phrase has since emerged as a compelling counter to the Olympic motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius" (faster, higher, stronger).

Poem, English Version:

Speaking of a potential future, my friends, I wish to highlight mainly two aspects to make our future—and perhaps even our present—more amicable, less hostile, more livable.

Among great commitments, great causes, I believe the one for reconciliation with nature holds an immensely significant place today.

Years ago, green was in vogue; there wasn’t an advertisement that didn't need to underscore the ecological quality of the products it tried to sell us: the eco-friendly car, eco-friendly food, eco-friendly materials, and so forth. This trend for the sake of being trendy has swiftly concluded; regrettably, this trend has also faded in the realm of major politics. You may recall, the grand global summit in Rio de Janeiro, where the North and South of the world were to meet to decide how to judiciously and respectfully use the resources of all humanity, of the entire planet? Well, the North, which should have tightened its belt a bit, simply declared it uninterested, and the summit ended with some generic promises (pollute less, cut fewer trees, exterminate fewer living species) but, in reality, concluded without substantial commitments.

Thus, it seems to me that today there is a need among those who are not looking for merely ephemeral engagement, those who cry out for freedom when everyone cries freedom, who shout for justice when everyone shouts justice, and perhaps also for peace when everyone shouts peace, or democracy or solidarity, to pay special, even contrarian attention, outside the trend, to the integrity of creation, if you will, to the reintegration of the biosphere.

Many might wonder: but what does reintegration, reconciliation with nature, mean? Who gives me reliable directions on what to do?

I'd like to attempt a summary, with a twist on a well-known motto. Baron De Coubertin revived the modern Olympics with the motto "Citius, Altius, Fortius"—faster, higher, stronger.

Today, these three words might well embody the quintessence of our civilization and its competition: strive to be faster, reach higher, be stronger.

I propose the opposite. I suggest "Lentius, Profundius, Soavius"—slower instead of faster, deeper instead of higher, gentler instead of stronger, with more gentleness, more subtlety, rather than with more energy, more muscle, in short, more bombastic. With this motto, no frontal battle is won, but perhaps it allows us to breathe longer.

Testo in versione originale, in Italiano:
